Leader ‘deeply humbled’ after being made permanent CEO of environmental health body

The professional membership body for the environmental health sector has appointed a permanent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead it into an exciting new chapter.

The Board of Trustees of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has formally confirmed the appointment of Fran McCloskey as CEO, following a review of the post which concluded this month. Fran has held the role in an interim capacity since October 2023 and has, for over 20 years, held senior roles in the charity sector, specialising in transformation.

The CIEH Board unanimously agreed to appoint Fran and said they had been ‘hugely impressed’ by her work leading the Executive Management Team since being seconded to the role and she had their ‘complete support to provide the leadership for CIEH’ moving forward.

Judith Hedgley, Chair of the Board, said:

“The Board of Trustees of CIEH is delighted to permanently appoint Fran to the role of CEO. In the last 18 months Fran has demonstrated her full competence and expertise to fulfil this role and lead CIEH into an exciting new chapter.

“She is an excellent ambassador for the organisation and for the environmental health profession as a whole and has already built strong relationships with stakeholders and partners during her period as interim CEO.

“We look forward to her continuing with this work and in delivering on the aims of our strategy for the benefit of our members and the profession.”

Fran McCloskey, Chief Executive Officer of CIEH, said:

“CIEH plays a crucial role in environmental health – I am deeply humbled to be appointed to the permanent role of CEO, and grateful for the trust being placed in me.

“It is a privilege to work alongside our dedicated staff, trustees, members, and partners. I am honoured to be part of such an inspiring profession and remain passionately committed to contributing my skills and experience to support our collective efforts in building a brighter future for environmental health, one that benefits both the profession and the communities we serve.”
