Londeners Warned ‘Keep Dogs Cool’ As Heat Wave Hits Capital

Londoners are being urged to keep their dogs cool as the heat wave hits full force.

While many of us (myself included!) will be loving the chance to don our bikinis and get out in the sunshine, for pet owners, the risks associated with letting their dog get too hot can be catastrophic.

That’s why the folks at money.co.uk (which provides pet insurance advice to pet owners) have created Work Out Your Walkies, a tool that tells dog owners exactly how far they need to walk their dog based on breed and age.

The table below shows data from the tool – I’ve pulled out the required walking distances for the top 10 dog breeds in London:

Breed Walking Distance Needed (KM) Walking Distance Needed (Miles) Walking Time Needed (Hours)
French Bulldog 5 3.125 1
Labrador Retriever 10 6.25 2
Cocker Spaniel 10 6.25 2
Pug 5 3.125 1
English Bulldog 5 3.125 1
Miniature Schnauzer 5 3.125 1
German Shepherd 7.5 4.6875 1.5
Miniature Dachshund 7.5 4.6875 1.5
Golden Retriever 10 6.25 2
Chihuahua 5 3.125 1

In order to keep their dogs safe by staying closer to home, the tool also reveals the number of laps you need to walk of your garden to cover the right distance for your dog.
