LONDON DUNGEON AND BROOK LAUNCH SUMMER SEXUAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN

Today London Dungeon’s famous Tavern has been renamed ‘The Cock and Beaver’ to announce the London attraction’s partnership with sexual health charity Brook.

Summer 2021 is predicted to be the ‘Summer of Love’ as sex-starved Brits emerge from their year-long lockdowns and ‘get to know’ each other once again. So, there has never been more of a need to destigmatise the discussion of sexual health. Everyone needs to be aware of what they need to do to ensure that they are staying safe whilst having fun as STIs can cause continuous issues if not dealt with and treated correctly. Those that may already worry that they could have one will need to go for STD testing to see if they have caught an infection so they can take the next necessary steps.

To prevent a return to Victorian level STIs the charity and London attraction have planned a series of public awareness campaigns, social skits, and events aimed at removing the embarrassment around STIs and improve sexual health understanding.

The initiatives aimed at 15-24-year-olds, who account for 47% of all STI diagnoses in England*, will use humor and history to encourage people to learn from the mistakes and misinformation of the past, get tested, and practice safe sex.

Dougie Boyd, Director of Education at Brook, said: “Many will be looking to make up for lost time as we emerge from lockdown. But, as we get back to sex and dating, it is important to keep up conversations around safe sex and regular screening to prevent the spread of STIs.

“While STIs and sexual health are certainly no laughing matter, talking about them does not need to be serious! We find one of the biggest barriers to good sexual health is poor communication – if people are too embarrassed to talk about their bodies or their concerns then they won’t have the confidence to get tested. For instance, men with lower libido might feel shy to even consult a doctor and ask how to remedy the condition. Getting an appointment with a doctor regarding the problem could be the best decision one could make. By studying your condition, they might be able to prescribe you supplements like TESTO or similar libido enhancing medication that can help you overcome the issue. However, this healthy practice of consultation seems to be absent in the lives of most people. This may have to do with the stigma that surrounds sex and its discussions. With London Dungeon we are tackling this head-on, using humour to destigmatise and normalise these conversations and empower people to confidently manage their sexual health.”

Catherine Pritchard, General Manager of The London Dungeon, added: “Victorian Englanders were riddled with STIs, but we know better now. Let’s stop history repeating itself when it comes to our sexual health!

“We’re proud to be partnering with Brook to let people know that times have moved on – STIs are no longer thought to be punishments for bad morality, they’re just the reality of unsafe sex.

“By shining a light on the misinformation of our past we’re hoping we can get this new generation comfortable and confident when it comes to talking about sex, having safe sex, and getting tested.”
