London duo Lost Chimes to release widely anticipated new album ‘Now I Swim’
Lost Chimes are London duo Gemma and Nicky Kirk.
Renowned for Gemma’s “sublime, outstanding voice” and spine-tingling live sound, the band produce music and site-specific performances that provoke, soothe and crystallise life.
2025 sees their eagerly awaited new album “Now I Swim” album spring into life expertly recorded with producer and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Diver (Van Morrison, Graham Coxon, Tom Robinson, Nitin Sawhney, Martyn Joseph).
Filled with compelling stories, intricate guitar work and stunning vocals, “Now I Swim” draws on the band’s family history and the collective memory of others. Through interviews and reminiscence, they focus on healing intergenerational trauma as well as ancestral strengths, weaving tales of resilience and hope that transcend time and place.
“Now I Swim” is an extraordinary and epic ode to life, imbued with the enchantment and allure of the sea.
The title track ‘Now I Swim’ is inspired by and features the voice of Sheila, a close friend of the band. “Now I Swim” evokes Shelia’s recollections of growing up with her family on the Galway coast. Tragically, she lost her father, a windsurfing champion, a few years ago.
However, through her daily swim in the Irish Sea, Sheila has found a way to connect with his memory and cope with her grief.
“Recline under the sea line,
Lounge in the blanket,
The guardian is resting,
Absorbing every droplet.
And in this garden,
We all stand up and stride,
Everybody swimming,
Every day, any tide.”
The song emerges from a tapestry of field recordings woven together to create a nautical soundscape. Filled with crashing waves and the crunch of oyster shells, Gemma’s haunting lyrical delivery floats above the melody like a siren’s call before the song reaches its thrilling climax.
