London tops list of attractions Britons are set to visit once restrictions lift

London’s Tate Modern, The Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour in Watford and Cadbury World near Birmingham are all among the top attractions UK adults are keenest to visit once all restrictions are lifted.

In a nationwide poll by Uber, Kew Gardens, York’s Instagram-hotspot The Shambles and Edinburgh’s Royal Mile emerged as the top three post-lockdown destinations easily accessible by Uber, with the British Museum, Chester Zoo and Alton Towers all making the top half of the list.

Some six of the top ten attractions listed were in London in a potential boost for the capital’s economy, and there were also strong showings for Manchester and Yorkshire.

The survey of 2,069 UK adults, conducted by YouGov, revealed that 35% of people also intend to visit a historical site once lockdown restrictions are lifted. York Minster, Edinburgh Castle and the Roman Baths in Bath were the top three of those listed, followed by Arthur’s Seat and Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock.

In all, 74% of UK adults said they intend to explore the UK’s towns, cities and sites of natural beauty this year, and 44% claimed not being able to travel due to Covid-19 restrictions made them feel ‘trapped’.

According to the poll, the average UK adult thinks they will take two staycations this year, with, on average, six towns, cities or sites of natural beauty visited.

While wandering through local parks has been a staple activity for millions during lockdown, 51% of people are eagerly awaiting the chance to ramble through sites of natural beauty, while 40% wanting to take a city break and 29% aiming to shop somewhere outside of their local area.

Restaurants are also high on people’s agenda, with three in ten (29%) looking to visit a restaurant outside of the area they live in. Restaurants famed for their celebrity owners – Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers, Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay –  emerged as the frontrunners in a wishlist of top restaurants.

While those surveyed were keen to get out and about again, the lockdown has changed the way they want to travel. Some 36% are prioritising covid-safety when it comes to their mode of transport, with one in five (19%) Londoners looking for more environmentally friendly ways to travel.

Jamie Heywood, Regional General Manager for Northern and Eastern Europe, Uber, said:

“During the pandemic we urged customers not to ride with us, instead offering discounted rides to NHS staff, carers and those with a vaccine appointment. As we slowly move out of lockdown, it’s encouraging to see that people are keen to explore what the rest of the UK has to offer and help get local economies back on their feet.”
