Londoners top the charts for scam concerns

Scams are officially the biggest financial concern for Londoners, according to new research from price comparison site, NerdWallet UK.

The financial experts, who help people make the right money moves, analysed Google Trends data in 25 cities around the country and scored each search term out of a possible 10 in order to find the biggest financial concerns for people all over the UK, as rising interest rates, increasing food prices and heightened energy bills continue to grip consumers’ purse strings. And its scams that are the biggest issue for London dwellers, with the city claiming the top spot, alongside second city Birmingham, Derby and Brighton.

The number of scams has been increasing since the start of the cost of living crisis, and as such, fraud now accounts for over 40% of crime and costs us nearly £7 billion a year. What’s more, new technologies are making these scams easier to do and harder to police. So it’s no surprise that they have been atop of London residents’ minds over the last year. Scams were also the second biggest concern for people UK-wide, showing that London residents’ feelings align with the rest of the UK.

‘Credit score’, ‘money’ and ‘budgeting’ also appeared to be high on Londoners’ minds, while the number one concern for Brits as a whole, the cost of living, trailed in 10th place for those in London.
