Luna leads the pack as London’s favourite dog name, knocking national favourite Poppy into second place

London’s dog owners set themselves apart from the rest of the UK favouring Cockapoos over Labrador Retrievers and ‘Lunas’ over ‘Poppys’. The results from Dogs Trust’s 2026 National Dog Survey, the UKs largest dog poll, are in!

Dogs Trust is celebrating five years of its landmark National Dog Survey which explores the lives, habits, and needs of the nation’s dogs. Receiving over 9,000 responses from dogs (and their owners) in Greater London in 2026, the survey helps Dogs Trust help more dogs by revealing where they need it most.

Top Dogs: London’s Favourite Dog Names Revealed

London joins the rest of the UK in seeing the names Mabel and Winnie rise in popularity in recent years, echoing a resurgence in popularity of traditional names seen among human babies.

Poppy has remained a highly popular dog name across the UK for more than a decade, and is the most common name overall, but it is overtaken by Luna for top dog in London. After Luna and Poppy, comes Bella, Lola and Ruby for most common female dog names in Greater London.

For male dogs, Bertie sneaks into the top 5 in Greater London despite only ranking 7th nationally. London continues to stand out when it comes to the popularity of new names granted within the last year, as Reggie and Arlo are growing in popularity in London specifically but entirely absent from national rankings.

Pawsitively Popular: London’s most common dog breeds

The UK loves a crossbreed and so does London! While pure breeds still just about come out on top, the gap is closer than you might think with single breeds making up 54% of surveyed dogs in London. Close on their tails however are cross breeds making up the remaining 46%, with just over a third of surveyed dogs (35%) being a cross between two or more breeds known by their owner.
It’s of no surprise then that ‘supermutts’ (or unknown mixed breeds) are the most commonly reported breed making up 11% of dogs in the local area.

London has a clear soft spot for Spaniels! With 3 of the top 5 surveyed dog breeds, being Spaniels and Spaniel crosses. Cockapoos even overtook Labrador Retrievers as the most common known breed, despite Labrador Retriever’s being the most commonly known breed across the UK.
