Make cycling a habit for life
Following the findings of Centre for London and London Environment Directors’ Network’s polling, which shows improved attitudes to cycling in walking in London, Siobhan Benita, said:
“We mustn’t presume that this attitudinal shift towards cycling and walking will be permanent. We have to work to take advantage of this moment, by installing new infrastructure as quickly as possible, so that people can establish sustainable habits for life.
“If we get this right, we could bring forward years of planning towards active travel by converting many temporary routes into permanent ones. The Mayor’s announcement on Streetspace was welcome, but a little behind other major European cities’ commitments. There is still much more that could be done across the capital to ensure we have safe spaces for everyone to walk and cycle.
“The task now is to roll out infrastructure rapidly, so that Londoners can start using them as they return to workplaces and travel around in larger numbers.”
