Man Utd ownership change is ‘one of the biggest moments in the club’s history
A CHANGE in ownership of Manchester United FC is the biggest event in the modern history of the club, according to Adam Stott of the unofficial fans’ channel The United Stand.
He told GB News: “We’re still waking up, actually feeling and thinking: “Is this actually a dream?’ That’s how it feels right now for a lot of United fans.
“But yes, it is really exciting times…it’s been 17 years, the fan base has been fighting back on the Glazer ownership for pretty much that whole time. We’ve lost quite a few fans from it. and some fans have just completely given up on any progress for the football club at all.
“Now this is a moment in history, probably one of the biggest moments in the club’s history, definitely in the modern day. And it is really exciting that the thought and the hope that this could actually be going ahead.”
In an interview with Isabel Webster and Andrew Pierce during Breakfast on GB News, he outlined fans’ problems with the Glazers.
“It’s the investment,” he said. “They never spent a penny of their own money on Manchester United, they leveraged the debt on the football club. That debt has risen year on year if the investment has been down, we haven’t invested in the infrastructure.
“The training ground, the facilities at the training ground – we haven’t had enough room to facilitate the women’s team at Manchester United either.
“The stadium is deteriorating. It’s one of the oldest and most famous stadiums in world football but there are cracks appearing everywhere throughout and we are falling behind.”
He added: “We used to be the best, we used to be up there with the best facilities and team stadium in the country, in the world. But we are falling behind even smaller clubs in this league right now.
“No disrespect to them, but Manchester United’s infrastructure has been sidestepped by the Glazers, and the money just seems to be going into them.
“The dividends taken out of the club year on year and lack of investment – it’s just been too much for the fans. And this moment now just feels like that. It just feels like that’s coming to an end.
“There is euphoria within the United fan base right now.”
Asked if another owner like the Glazers might take it over and not invest, Mr Stott told GB News: “Yeah, that’s very true. That is the ultimate fear.
“We’ve had many false dawns before. We know that this is serious, but the biggest fear is like who is going to take over the plan and the structure of the ownership coming in is important, I think more than how much money the consortium…or the new owner coming in.
“It’s more important, the structure of the ownership. The fans have to be involved in this. A lot of the United fan base will probably be on the side of Jim Radcliffe’s takeover.
“He is a Manchester United fan. I know he has spoken about the club and was interested in the club before. It needs to be someone with the fans at heart and the sporting side of this commercial juggernaut, that is we’re not blinded, we’re not stupid.”
He added: “We know that anyone coming in is going to want something back from it as well. But when the Glazers ran it, it was pretty much just leveraged with debt consistently holding us back and we can see that it was the deterioration of everything like I said, the team, the performances on the pitch, combined with the stadium, the facilities.
“It was just too much, and I think the Glazers just hit the ceiling now where they cannot take any more money out of Manchester United. The whole push for the Super League, I think was the last straw from them.
“They couldn’t get that through, and I think now they’re looking to sell but like you did say then it is important that this next ownership isn’t just the same thing: someone looking to make a quick buck out of Manchester United again.”
