Mango madness! You can now get fresh mangoes from India delivered to your doorstep
Nourished Communities, an online market stall and physical store, that was setup to help farmers and artisan producers during COVID-19 has secured listings for some of the world’s most desirable mangoes including ‘king of the fruits’ the Alphonso mango, Badami and Kesar, as well as organic mangos Banginnapali and Tottapuri.
Due to their highly limited seasonal availability, Nourished Communities is working closely with Indian grocery supplier Sujash, to import mangoes from across India, including Goa and Gujarat to sell online and instore, from £12.99 for 6.
Rollo Millership, Founder of Nourished Communities commented:
“We love mangoes because they are very sweet, very healthy, and very messy! Everyone should be able to enjoy the wonderful favours the world brings us, and we’re excited to be bringing fresh mangoes to homes across the UK. Since March 2020 we’ve supported producers in the UK who struggled when lockdowns forced them to stop selling on stalls, and we’re not going to stop supporting producers from further afield too – including the incredible people on the ground in India hand-picking each and every mango for us”
The Banginnapali and the Tottapuri organic mangoes are in season for only five days, so Nourished Communities we only will have them in store and available for next day delivery all across the UK on their website for a limited time. The Banginnapali mango is slightly larger than the others being sold, whilist the Tottapuri is yellow with a splattering of green even when ripe.
The first mango exported to the UK was an Alphonso mango in 1953 for the Queen’s Coronation, and it is often described as the king of fruits. Kesar has a milder flavour whilst the Alphonso is richer and more complex. The Badami mango is sweeter and softer than the other two and is crowd-pleaser!
With the closure of Farmers’ Markets, Rollo Millership, who has worked on fruit and vegetable stalls since a teenager, started Nourished Communities at the onset of the coronavirus crisis (March 2020) to support local businesses, producers and farmers whose livelihoods have been affected by the lockdown and also those who didn’t want to miss out on fresh, seasonal produce from farmers’ markets.
Nourished Communities brings the finest quality seasonal home-grown produce & products from the English countryside and beyond straight to your door. The online market trades online and out of a physical store in Islington on Canonbury Lane, offering produce to local residents and shoppers who place orders for pick-up.
Most recently, Rollo and the team have been supporting the ‘Curry Club’ which sees London chefs (including Meera Sodha, Anna Jones and more) joining forces to cook meals for London’s vulnerable, sourcing produce from farms close to London who have been hit by the pandemic – and they’ve now reached their crowdfunding funding target!
Since launch, the business has tripled in size and have started delivering nationwide, whilst ensuring they maintain community & localness with the producers they stock. Rollo has now also secured himself on to a Natwest accelerator programme.
