The newly released indie feature film Mermaid Down, from the director Jeffrey Grellman, is a mermaid tale unlike we’ve ever seen before. The film stars Alexandra Bokova as the mermaid, hauled out of the Pacific ocean, has her tail chopped off with a fisherman’s axe, and forced to survive in a psychiatric facility for women where no one believes she is a mermaid.

The film is gaining international attention as it seems to break all the rules with its mending genres, modest £64,000 ($85k) budget, and a unique original story.

Written by Grellman himself, Mermaid Down is received with mixed reviews. One thing is for certain, the lead actress Bokova delivers an impressive performance of a mermaid we’ve all been waiting for. She is fearless, beautiful, and her choices honest and bold. A mute performance conveys the characters every emotion and keeps us mesmerized the entire film.
