NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS’ DAY: ADVICE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION FROM CARE HOME RESIDENTS
To celebrate National Grandparents Day on 2nd October, residents at Hatfield Peverel Bupa Care Home have passed on their advice for younger generations.
Having lived through many happy, healthy years, residents from the care home wanted to share their tips and wisdom on how to live an enriched life.
101 years old, or ‘years-young’ (as she describes herself), Edna Wilson, advises the younger generation to “never go to bed on an argument.” She shared: “Disagreements are a part of life, but sometimes we have to learn to compromise. Never go to bed angry or upset with loved ones and never say anything you’ll regret – not only will you sleep better but it will also bring you and your loved ones closer together.”
Due to celebrate her 90th birthday in November, resident Kathleen Bretton says her worst kept secret is to eat well and keep moving. She says the youth of today should try as hard as they can to “live a healthy lifestyle and keep active and try and take some time out of every day to do something that sparks joy” such as dancing or going for a power walk.
Sandra Brinkley, 73, has been living at Hatfield Peverel for 5, and advises the younger generation to “live life to the fullest.” She comments: “Everyone should make the most of the opportunities presented to them in life and cherish the small things. It’s easy to get wrapped up in comparing yourself to others so you have to make a real effort to think about the things you do have rather than what you don’t have.”
Resident Teresa Reed, 64, advises that younger people should “take care of your parents while they are still around.” Teresa had a wonderful relationship with her parents and often recalls some of her favourite memories spent with family.
She added: “Never take family for granted, they will always be there for you, so make the most of the time you have with them and be sure to create lots of special memories.”
Carol Walker, Home Manager at Hatfield Peverel Bupa Care Home, commented: “Our residents have led extremely interesting lives and this really shines through as they share memories of years gone by. We have so much to learn from the older generation, which is why we wanted to share our resident’s advice with the world.”
