Northern Ireland nightmare for delegates at official Conservative conference hotels
‘Do Not Disturb’ and ‘Please Make Up My Room’ were not the only hangers on senior Conservative MP’s doors this morning.
Just days after leading Brexiteer Steve Baker apologised to Ireland for the way Leave campaigners behaved over the last six years, Conservative officials were forced to run around five hotels in Birmingham after pro-EU messages were left hanging from their bedroom doors last night.
Replica hotel door hangers were left on the handles of the Hyatt, Jury’s Inn, Travelodge, Hilton and Hampton hotels – where all the senior Conservative MPs, Secreataries of State, Ministers and delegates sleep – with the message: “Do Not Disturb… Peace in Northern Ireland”.
The Prime Minister, Northern Ireland Secretary, their top teams and Conservative conference attendees awoke to the message after some late-night antics from the cross-party organisation, European Movement UK.
Founded by Sir Winston Churchill in the aftermath of WWII, the European Movement is working to rebuild relationships with Europe and restore the country’s leadership role on the world’s stage.
With a series of door hangers mimicking hotel ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs, the organisation is calling on the Conservatives to end the threat of Northern Ireland being ‘catapulted back in time.’
The reverse features another plea from the organisation: “Help us restore hope, friendship and leadership around the world.”
Meanwhile, the Rt. Hon Lord Michael Heseltine, President of the European Movement UK and former Deputy Prime Minister, warned that the Government’s efforts to scrap the Northern Ireland Protocol will get “massacred” in the House of Lords.
Speaking at a European Movement UK event at Conservative Party conference, Heseltine slammed plans to disrupt peace in Northern Ireland and urged the Government to U-turn on the legislation “tomorrow”.
Anna Bird, CEO of the European Movement, said:
“Day by day the people of Northern Ireland have rebuilt their image and transformed their country into an envy of the world. We can’t risk undoing this progress.
“Nowhere is the Brexit issue more serious than in Northern Ireland. A country that has benefited enormously from funding and support from the EU now risks being catapulted back in time.
“As Conservative delegates meet in Birmingham this week, this is just a little light-hearted reminder from us to keep the Northern Ireland and European debate alive within the Conservative Party.
“As decision-makers, politicians from all parties cannot escape the consequences of their actions. This Brexit still threatens to unleash a tide of unprecedented disruption to peace and stability in Northern Ireland.
“So we will keep pushing all politicians and all parties to face the reality of the calamity of Brexit. As Liz Truss, her team and Conservative delegates wake up today and open their doors, we hope they will be reminded of the importance of this debate.
“Meanwhile, the European Movement is the only organisation with the courage to expose the calamity of Brexit and win the Battle for the Soul of our Country.”
