PRIMARY school pupils had the opportunity to meet business professionals from the London Borough of Hounslow and quiz them about job opportunities in their field of expertise during the school’s Careers Week.

The children, aged between seven and eleven years old who attend Oak Hill Primary School in Feltham, posed lots of questions to the optical experts from Specsavers Feltham who were on hand to discuss all things relating to eyes and ears.

As each stage in a child’s education is key, the opportunity to be able to speak to experts in their field proved invaluable for the eager pupils. Supporting the event was Samit Shah, Specsavers Feltham’s ophthalmic director, and Meera Malhotra, store manager.

Meera says: ‘We were delighted to be invited to support the school’s Careers Fair. As a team we’re focused on individual development, so it was great to speak to the children and help them understand more about the different jobs at Specsavers.

‘With so many career possibilities on offer these days, I am sure it can be quite overwhelming when selecting GCSE subjects. There was a real buzz on the day and a vibrant atmosphere, so I am sure the pupils gained a lot of insight into a variety of professions to equip them with more knowledge moving forward with their studies.’

The children received an assortment of goodies, including posters and leaflets about time spent using screens and protecting their eyes. The children gained lots of newfound knowledge to pass on to friends and family, as well as insights into the different jobs at Specsavers.

As an organisation, Specsavers invest in staff development, encouraging them to further their qualifications and progress their careers within the group. Students who prefer a more blended style of learning can apply for an apprenticeship, which combines formal study with on-the-job training.

The Specsavers Career Pathway offers staff the opportunity to study for industry-recognised qualifications which encompass a wide variety of roles, including customer services, optician, dispensing optician, optical assistant, audiologist, audiology assistant and laboratory technicians.
