Oceanallover present their London debut of dance, music and theatre performance Ecdysis
Renowned, award winning Scottish visual dance company are bringing their work to the Capital for the first time, presenting Ecdysis (In Vivo) at the Lanterns Studio Theatre, London – a collaborative performance using visceral, soul-filled original music in combination with performance, dance and unique, sculptural costume .
Presented as a pilgrimage through the landscape, Ecdysis (In Vivo) will emerge at several locations in Scotland and Internationally throughout 2021 and 2022, inviting the audience to enter an altered reality and to find themselves within a piece of audio-visual poetry.
The dance, music and theatre performance will make this journey in a series of chapters that make reference to the reptile species that can be found in the wild in the UK. Reptiles shed their skin as they grow and Ecdysis (In Vivo) looks at both the physical and metaphorical concepts of growth.
Ecdysis (In Vivo) is a collaborative performance and music event with dancers and musicians from London, Bristol and Scotland. The project will be shown initially in the UK, Japan and New York.
Alex Rigg, Oceanallover Director said:
“Ecdysis (In Vivo) is a sculptural happening, durational performance, momentary glimpse, promenade narration, chapters from a life, one moment in a life-time.”
Exploring transformation, Oceanallover has collaborated with legendary corset maker and iconic socialite Mr. Pearl, whose bespoke craftsmanship will be unveiled through a shedding of costume-skin during performances by singer Breezy Lee and New York drag artist Joey Arias creating work that is provocative, experimental and uncompromising.
Stepping out of their everyday skins, the project is a collaboration with leading electronic music producers from London and Bristol and is an energetic invitation to dance. Four original EPs (12 tracks) accompany the project, spawned from the ethereal poetry of Oceanallover director, Alex Rigg. With strong dub-step elements, sparse syncopated rhythmic patterns and prominent sub-bass frequencies the tracks are headed up by legendary MC Sgt Pokes, founder of CROYDUB alongside singer-songwriter Breezy Lee, former band leader of Size Nine, to present a body of work produced by electronic music pioneers including Pinch, N-Type, Lost, Silkie, Sepia and Mako. Their musical styles will be joined by leading Scottish dancers and performers, forming the basis for a collaboration with Birdgang in London and providing the basis for an educational project with Stove Network in Dumfries.
The project is inspired by the relationship between dress, performance and place, with a specific focus on journeying as a transformative experience. Ecdysis (In Vivo) makes a natural progression from previous project, Transfigured (2010-20), and follows along the path of the surrealist revolution, encouraging its audience to make their own personal revolutions and to see the world as a place of wonder.
A growing and a shedding, Ecdysis (In Vivo) is a response to landscapes both urban and rural, blurring boundaries between an appreciation of place alongside the placement of an unusual and unexpected art event.
