What Makes Procida Worthy of Cultural Capital?

Procida is the smallest island in the Bay of Naples. That’s why its bigger and more well-known neighbours, like Capri and Ischia, often overshadow it. However, Procida has an exceptional beauty that rings with none of the artificialness. It spreads over an area of 4 square kilometres and hosts a population of 10,000 or so natives. Procida has a lively feel to it. Unlike many other overpopulated regions, this place does not feel cramped at all.

The island has a wealth of traditional artistry roots. There are plenty of artisan workshops that highlight its rich cultural heritage. You can even find ancient Greek artefacts dating back to the 16th century BCE in Procida. Charles the 3rd also turned this little piece of heaven into a personal game reserve. Afterwards, it became host to a major shipbuilding industry.

Throughout the millennia, Procida has accumulated some incredible architectural designs. Its multi-coloured buildings denote its rich historical significance. Visitors can even dive underwater to witness the majesty of archaeological sites.

A Haven for Nature Lovers

Procida offers incredible views of Whales and Dolphin colonies of the Mediterranian. The playful creatures of the sea love to show off and shower the watchers with splashing water.

Significance of Procida in Literature and Cinema

Many significant works of art have taken inspiration from Procida. For example;

Arturo Island by Elsa Morante is one of the classic Italian novels that Procida inspires.
Graziella by Alphonse de Lamartine is also a legendary novel that features Procida.
Procida featured in the 1963 movie Cleopatra.
Recently, it has also appeared in The Talented Mr Ripley and The Postman.
