Revealed: 78% of London homes switch to smart home tech, saving an average of £317.52 in bills per year according to new study

The most popular smart home device in UK households is the Smart TV (hop over to here to know more about the different apps that you can access), with nearly half of people having one in their home. Smart speakers and thermostats also make the top three.

Smart security cameras rank as the most-wanted smart home tech device to purchase in the UK with 41% of people in the UK selecting this as their top choice.

The data reassures 47% of Brits confused about the cost-efficiency of smart products, as smart home, as nearly half (49%) of owners report 318 savings per year on energy bills on average.

Leeds and Sheffield rank as the top cities with the most smart home technology, with over 80% (81%) of residents owning a smart device.

Since March 2020, the world has been spending more time at home than ever before. With nearly a quarter (24%) of people investing in at least three smart home devices since the beginning of lockdown, this technology is on a rapid rise and has become embedded in our homes to help make them more efficient and safer.

Across the UK, a staggering three in four (74%) people own a smart device, which is nearly 50 million people across the country and, since lockdown, more than half (54%) have invested in a smart device for their homes. That’s according to new research from Confused.com. With lockdown restrictions seeing people spending more time at home than ever before, there has been a surge of popularity for this technology. But what is the most popular?

According to the research, nearly half (45%) of Brits who own smart technology have a Smart TV. With lockdown restrictions seeing millions of people binge-watching films and shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney +, it comes as no surprise that these figures are so high. Meanwhile, nearly one third of people (32%) own a smart speaker, making these the two most popular devices in UK homes.

Top five owned smart devices in UK homes:

Smart TV – 45%

Smart speaker – 32%

Smart thermostat – 18%

Smart light bulb – 17%

Smart wifi router – 16%

However, when people were asked which devices they wanted most, entertainment was not at the top of their list. In fact, two in five (41%) respondents claim a smart security camera was their most wanted piece of smart technology. This was followed by a smart doorbell at 35%. As the nation continues to spend more time indoors, feeling secure in our homes has become increasingly important.

Saving money with smart home technology during lockdown

With many people continuing to work from home for the foreseeable future, household bills have increased. In fact, further research by Confused.com in 2020 found that nearly a third (29%) of Brits reported an increase in their energy bills since the first lockdown in March 2020, paying out 29 extra per month, on average, making smart home technology even more worth the investment for many.

However, it seems that owning a smart device could help in reducing these costs, despite nearly half (47%) of people in the UK admitting to being confused about how smart devices can save money on energy bills. But the research shows nearly half (49%) of smart tech owners reported an average annual saving of 318 by swapping appliances to smart devices, making them well worth the investment.

For those wanting to manage their heating bills this winter a little better, the smart thermostat is the third most common smart device in UK homes. One in five (18%) Brits own one already, helping them to manage their energy far more efficiently. For those who don’t own one, the research shows smart thermostats are the third most wanted device in UK homes.
