Sail through 300 years of history with an exclusive Sir Christopher Wren Thames cruise
As part of the Wren300 celebrations, marking the tercentenary of the death of Britain’s most renowned architect, Sir Christopher Wren, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is hosting a one-off special river cruise, which promises to offer new perspectives on Wren and his creations from the River Thames. Wren by River is part of a series of talks, lectures and debates that are taking place across the capital in four of Wren’s greatest buildings, the Wren London Series, until October.
Departing from North Greenwich Pier at 7pm on 1 September, the exclusive Wren by River sailing will be guided by Colin Thom, UCL lecturer and the leading authority on the architectural history of London. Tickets for the hour-long sailing start at £15.50 for adults and £11.30 for concessions*.
Guests setting sail on the Wren by River cruise will enjoy the unique perspective the Thames offers for an up-close look at the many Baroque designs that face the water. From east to west, the tour will take in iconic buildings such as:
The masterpiece that is the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich which was first designed as permanent home for retired sailors of the Royal Navy
The Royal Observatory, perhaps especially noteworthy to Wren who was an astronomer as well as architect
The Monument, a memorial to the Great Fire of London, a tragedy that provided Wren with a blank canvas in some parts of London
St. Paul’s Cathedral, the rebuilding of which is his crowning achievement
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, a palatial riverside home for retired and injured servicemen.
The Wren by River cruise from North Greenwich Pier to Battersea Power Station Pier sets sail on one of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ comfortable vessels. Its indoor seating, large windows, and an outdoor deck promise fantastic views of Wren’s structures. An onboard café bar will offer a range of refreshments throughout the sailing, allowing guests to sit back with a hot or cold beverage, and drink in London’s architectural history.
As part of the celebrations, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has also partnered with St Paul’s Cathedral and Old Royal Naval College to bring you unforgettable experiences. Savings of up to 30% are available when guests book joint tickets, which include access to both attractions and boat travel between them.
