Sales of football equipment skyrocketed during Women’s Euros

Sales of football equipment skyrocketed during this year’s Women’s Euros, new data has revealed, with purchases one third higher than during the men’s tournament last year.

According to latest sales data, footballs, cones, speed ladders, and goals were amongst the best selling items this summer as the Lionesses marched to glory.

When compared to purchases during the 2020 Men’s Euros last year, data from online marketplace OnBuy reveals that sales of football equipment increased 31%.

The increase in sales highlights how the England Women’s side inspired young players across the nation to get outside and play, according to the experts.

The Euro 2022 final, which was hosted at Wembley Stadium and saw the lionesses defeat Germany, was watched by 87,192 fans – a new attendance record for either a men’s or women’s European Championship.

The match also achieved a peak TV audience of 17.5Million on BBC One, making it, to date, the most-watched programme in the UK of 2022.

Historically, the women’s game has attracted less attention and funding compared to the men’s, while access for women and girls has been limited at a grassroots level.

It is hoped England’s victory at Euro 2022 can be a turning point for the sport.

Shroopa Patel, Sports and Outdoor Category Manager at OnBuy, said: ” Seeing the nation support our women’s side this summer was a joy to watch – we were all gripped by Lionesses fever!

“The increase in sales highlights how people were not only watching the team, but also being inspired to play!

“It is amazing to think that young girls are watching players like Chloe Kelly, Ella Toone, and Beth Mead, and thinking ‘I want to do that!'”

“The fact some of our top selling items were footballs, goals, and training gear shows that kids are wanting to get started within the sport – it’s fantastic to see!”
