Shamima Begum ‘clearly represents a threat’ to UK says Johnny Mercer

ISIS bride Shamima Begum is a threat to the security of the UK, according to Veteran Affairs Minister Johnny Mercer.

He commented on her case ahead of a decision on her appeal against her being stripped of her British citizenship, which is expected to be announced by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission today.

Asked about the case, Mr Mercer told GB News: “That’s a decision for the Home Secretary and previous home secretaries, certainly Sajid Javid when he was Home Secretary, made a decision to revoke her citizenship.

“That’s a decision for them and the court, she clearly represents a threat.

“There is a lot of information in that case that’s not in the public domain. I don’t think it’s worth discussing it in public.

“I think those decisions are made in the courts and in the Home Office and I’m sure they’ll come to the right conclusion.”

Asked about the US president’s visit to Poland in an interview during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, he said: “Joe Biden was very strong yesterday.

“He’s made it clear Ukraine is not going to lose this conflict, a year on people didn’t expect Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine to still be standing and fighting so hard.

“The West is resilient behind them, the West is united, it’s not a fractured group. That’s a very strong message that goes to Putin.

“What’s going on is a tragedy, the murder of young Russians and Ukrainians in in a pointless illegal occupation.

“It’s terribly, terribly sad it’s gone on this long and like everybody else, I want it to come to an end.”

Asked about reports that China may provide weapons to Russia, he said: “I’ve seen that speculation, I’m not sure that’s what’s going on.

“It’s pretty clear that Chinese interference in this would not be welcomed but I think that’s at a very embryonic stage at the moment.

“Russia is going to lose this war. They’ve lost 144,000 troops already, I don’t think any nation can sustain that yet alone…

“It’s awful, it’s sad. This is not the age for this sort of thing and I hope like everybody else that the Chinese don’t get involved , the end of the war is forthcoming.”

On pay talks between nursing unions and the Government, he said: “These are private negotiations that have been going on for a long time.

I just want to see the strikes come to an end…I don’t think these strikes are helping anybody.

“I recognise that people want to be paid more. I recognise that some of the conditions that our public sectors work in are extremely challenging but I don’t think people should be going out on strike.

“I hope these negotiations are successful. And I know the Secretaries of State are working hard to deliver that and ensure that we bring the strikes to an end.”

Mr Mercer also talked about the Government’s new £5 million health initiative: “The Health Innovation Fund is a £5 million programme that essentially uses the best of British innovation technology to tackle really difficult wounds and injuries that troops have sustained over the past few years.

“There’s 22 groups across the country that are going to benefit from this funding. There are some of our servicemen and women who struggle with wounds and injuries and pressure sores that just won’t heal, the commitments from these operations go on years afterwards.

“I’m delighted that as part of government we’re delivering on this and changing people’s lives.”
