SIR Jacob Rees-Mogg has backed the Home Secretary and said the police need to be impartial and even-handed.

The GB News presenter said: “The Home Secretary is right to highlight these inconsistencies. Policing needs to be impartial and affect everyone in the same way.

“Now there is a legitimate question about whether they have the powers that they need, but they seem to have them when it was the Sarah Everard protest…they have them now for dealing with people marching who are calling for jihad, because there have already been instances of violence.”

He continued: “Thus the Home Secretary has said what many people are thinking and the calls to sack her seem to be disproportionate because whether she’s broken the ministerial code or not is something of a moot point…she was talking about her own departmental area where she has direct responsibility.

“But really, truthfully, people expect the Government to act not just commentate. At the moment the Government seems to be unsure where it’s going and this is leaving a vacuum that the police are unable to fill.”

Sir Jacob added: “The Home Secretary is in charge and this means that if there is violence on Saturday, the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police will find it very difficult to be commissioner on Monday. “
