15 November 2022: Spaces & Stories, Broadwick Live’s global full-service event space provider and platform, is proud to present Flipper’s Roller Disco Boogie Palace, adding this new attraction to their expanding portfolio.
Broadwick Live, creator and developer of much-loved venues such as Printworks London & Magazine London has signed a venue hire agreement with Flipper’s, a new music-led skating attraction. The concept was launched in New York at The Rockefeller Centre, followed by the London site at Exhibition London on Wednesday 9 November, with guests including Usher and Mary J Blige joining stylish Londoner’s including Mia Regan, Joy Crookes and Laura Bailey all attending the launch.
In 1979 Los Angeles, Flipper’s was a hub for the roller skate community – a place for this buzzing subculture – to connect and grow. Now, the spirit of Flipper’s has been revived for London’s skate enthusiasts. As the first permanent, year-round venture since the original location closed in 1981, Exhibition London and Flipper’s is the home to regular live performances, community events and content, featuring branded apparel to showcase the talented, diverse roller skating community around the world.
Simon Tracey, Broadwick Live CEO, comments: “We are thrilled to be launching Flippers at Exhibition London, signalling an expansion of Broadwick Live’s entertainment and venue offering, while introducing a new cultural destination in the capital. Through our venues, we strive to preserve and reimagine disused industrial spaces and unexpected corners of our cities into new centres of cultural gravity with a global resonance, and a lasting local impact.”
Broadwick Live’s latest partnership with Flipper’s highlights their ability to handpick unique and iconic spaces that proudly sit within Spaces and Stories, a portfolio of half a million square metres of hybrid venue space, characterised by outstanding quality, function and flexibility.
Kevin Wall at Flipper’s shares: ‘The partnership with Broadwick Live was core to our decision when deciding to bring the Flipper’s brand to the UK. Their track record in managing and operating, curating and delivering authentic music-led cultural destinations and events in the UK is unmatched.’
Impeccably restored from the bones of a Victorian engine house, Exhibition London is a unique multi-purpose music and culture venue and flexible event space in the heart of West London.
The first floor hosts the Flipper’s main skating area, stage and bar, set up with a mix of tables, private booths and seating. The black lacquered roller rink, with space for up to 250 skaters can be covered to host live performances, seated dinners, conferences and private parties for up to 1,750 people. The impressive double-height ceiling, original arched windows and ceiling crane conserve the building’s Victorian past as an engine railway house. Suited to flexible set-up and ambitious productions, it is perfect for a variety of uses – from skating parties to corporate events, filming and photoshoots.
A private mezzanine overlooks the first floor, with a view of the skating rink and stage. The design echoes the aesthetic of the space below, with jet-black flooring studded with neon signs and palm trees. The Lizard Lounge seats around 80 people and is an ideal breakout space, VIP area or viewing platform.
The ground floor is an impressive space for dinners, brand events and receptions. It is home to Hot Dogs and Caviar, named after the original Flipper’s LA restaurant, which offers elevated American diner classics with a focus on well-sourced ingredients. The space can be configured as a reception area for skate and music events on the first floor or as a standalone space. With a built-in glass bar, neon signage and diner-style seating for up to 500 guests, it is built for atmospheric and unforgettable events.
Jemma Scott, Head of Spaces & Stories, says: “We are delighted to be introducing this new and exciting music-led skating concept to our growing portfolio, which will be hosting regular live performances and community events, illuminating the skating world. Spaces & Stories’ new venue-hire agreement signals an exciting new chapter, with Flipper’s also being perfect for corporate events, filming and photoshoots.”
