Square Root creates UK’s first crowd-sourced alcohol-free cocktail

East London soda producer Square Root has added a Classic Mojito to it’s range of AF cocktails, perfect for Dry January.

In a UK-first, the recipe for this new cocktail was chosen by the people. Millie Gooch, founder of the Sober Girl Society’s Instagram channel, asked her followers to vote for the cocktail they’d most like to see made into an alcohol-free version of. Out of options including a Mojito, a Collins and a Daiquiri, The Mojito was chosen as the winner.

The brand then developed three possible twists on this cocktail: the Classic Mojito, a green tea and lemongrass Mojito and a version with ginger and kaffir lime leaf. After another public vote, The Classic Mojito came out on top.

Using their expert knowledge of fruit and flavour, Square Root turned this into a ready to drink bottle within a matter of weeks. The final Mojito was created using a combination of black sun dried limes, kaffir lime leaf and fresh lime juice. Raw cane sugar mimics the flavour of white rum, while a 24-hour fresh mint syrup adds a refreshing edge.

Square Root co-founder Robyn Simms said: “The idea behind crowd-sourcing this new cocktail was to inspire non-drinkers and people who are looking to cut down their alcohol consumption to take ownership over their choices. At Square Root we always want to be at the forefront of AF drinks development so it’s really exciting to be launching a never been done before project and crowdsourcing the idea for our new ready to drink product.”

In addition to the Mojito, Square Root already makes steam distilled, alcohol-free versions of Gin & Tonic and Negroni at its Soda Works in Leyton, East London.

Sober Girl Society is one of the largest communities for sober women around the world. Founder Mille Gooch said: “I was over the moon to work with Square Root on this collaboration, having been a fan of their sodas since discovering them at the Club Soda Mindful Drinking Festival.

“Our members are always asking for recommended alternatives of their favourite cocktails and sometimes there just isn’t one, so it’s amazing to be able to engage our community in this project, bridge the gap between brand and consumer to find out what non-drinkers really want and help Square Root expand their already exciting range.”

The Classic Mojito will be available to buy online from 19th October, priced at £1.80 (200ml bottle).
