Step inside Shan Shui Social: Design concept revealed by Macaulay Sinclair
AWARD-WINNING interior architecture and design studio Macaulay Sinclair has unveiled its concept for Shan Shui Social – a new casual dining and bar destination in Victoria, London.
Shan Shui Social is a slight departure from the original Shan Shui restaurants, which focus on the elegant 1920s Shanghainese art deco aesthetic. Macaulay Sinclair has taken inspiration from this design period, but infused it with a more playful and intimate vibe, positioning Shan Shui Social as the “cheeky younger sister” of the brand.
The compact, 74-cover space on the bustling Buckingham Palace Road embodies more of an open-to-all, back-alley bar atmosphere, rather than the glitzy Gatsby-esque design commonly seen in art deco inspired restaurant interiors.
Mike Sinclair, director at Macaulay Sinclair, said: “We’re excited to have designed and delivered this new venture, after previously working on Singapulah in Soho with the same owners. Shan Shui Social has a unique brand concept that we have thoroughly enjoyed researching and bringing to life, within another central London location.
“We hope the new space will resonate with fans of the original Shan Shui restaurants, as well as perhaps attract some newer clientele looking for a unique dining experience.”
As guests step through its Victorian period shopfront, they are greeted by an “old world” ambience; subtle art deco forms are presented in rich colour and texture. These art deco references are balanced with textures and patterns inspired by the Roaring Twenties, all whilst holding the more casual and relaxed feel of the Shan Shui Social brand. The interior design is punctuated by pops of metallic and mirrored finishes, creating a sense of intrigue and discovery.
The central feature bar plays out as the prominent ground floor design feature, drawing the eye down the space with a clever play of mirrors that manipulate light and perception. The bar itself is partially obscured from the entrance, adding a touch of mystery.
On the basement level, the atmosphere takes on a “speakeasy” feel, perfect for intimate gatherings. Small booths for four nestled within vaults, offer a touch of privacy, while floral motifs woven into the interior space, presented through custom-designed wallcoverings and traditional painted anaglypta wallpapers, connect the space to the broader Shan Shui identity.
Patterns dance throughout Shan Shui Social, culminating in the showstopping bespoke porcelain mosaic floor. This intricate detail serves as a testament to Macaulay Sinclair’s commitment to creating a truly immersive and memorable experience.
Ellen Chew, Director of Chew On This Group, said: “Sustainability is extremely important to us. The kitchen at Shan Shui Social is fully electric to reduce carbon emissions and provides a safe and comfortable environment for our staff. We also continually strive to source the best ingredients from local producers for our dishes.”
Shan Shui Social opened in April and is located at 14 Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1W 0QP.
