As the world’s biggest football tournament approaches, online supermarket Ocado.com is launching Half-Time Delivery bundles – a very limited number of food and drink bundles delivered exactly during the half-time sweet spot, so football fans can avoid missing out on any of the action.
It comes on the back of new research by Ocado revealing that 73% of Londoners have missed an iconic football moment after stepping away from the screen at the wrong time.
The research also showed that a huge 60% of Londoners say they’ll be getting stuck into the tournament this year from the comfort of their own home, or from a friend or family member’s home. In comparison, just 25% say they’ll be watching from the pub or bars, largely down to the late night, mid-week games – the main reason one fifth (20%) say they’ll be staying in. 34% also admit it’s because they want to spend less money.
And with so many hosting at home this tournament, almost a third of Londoners (42%) say their food and drink choices will be influenced by the teams playing. Co-host nation Mexico in particular is generating huge interest with football – and food – fans. Almost half (48%) say they will be exploring more Mexican food on match days, whilst Spain, Japan and Turkey also ranked highly in the top ten national cuisines football fans will be tucking into during this year’s tournament**.
But patriotism is still shining through. Fish and chips and bacon butties are the top English classics Brits will be enjoying while watching England play, whilst almost one in five (18%) even said they’d be tucking into a Full English during the nighttime games!
Ocado’s Half-Time Delivery bundles offer three food and drink packages inspired by the tournament’s participating nations. Best of British features classics including Willy’s Pork Pies, M&S Collection Ultimate Sharing Sausage Roll, and not forgetting the English Breakfast Tea from Teapigs. Host Nation Hotlist celebrates North America flavours from Mexican Beef Birria Tacos, to the iconic American Pop Tarts. Global Flavours is inspired by cuisines including France, Spain, Japan and Australia, from Arnotts Pizza Shapes, to Itsu Korean BBQ Gyoza.
To launch the campaign, Ocado has signed iconic football manager Harry Redknapp as their “Half-Time Delivery Manager”. Redknapp delivered an emphatic locker room pep talk to a team of real Ocado drivers, rousing them ahead of their all-important deliveries of food for the fans this tournament.
Over two in five Londoners(41%) believe Redknapp should’ve been England manager, and he also came out on top when asked which manager would’ve delivered England to global footballing glory. We’re a confident bunch though – over a quarter of Londoners (37%) believe they themselves would be capable of managing England to the finals…!
Dan Elton, Chief Customer Officer at Ocado Retail, said: ‘Most football fans will be watching the tournament from homes this year, and whether that be a full house of family and friends coming together, or a more quiet affair, Ocado is here to help everyone enjoy the tournament in their own way – and most importantly, ensure they don’t miss out on a moment of the action. With many fans planning on enjoying a spread of British classics, it’s also interesting to see so many of us inspired to try the cuisines of other participating nations. Ocado’s unbeatable range of British favourites and global flavours ensures all tastes are catered for, and all conveniently delivered straight to your door.’
Ocado’s Half-Time Delivery bundles will be available in London and Manchester only on the 17th, 23rd and 27th June. Bookable via a dedicated website the bundles are strictly limited and on a first come, first served basis.
