‘The Banksy’ Tunnel Seeks New Champion!

There is just one month left to enter Leake Street Arches’ competition to find an ‘Artist in Residence’ to partner with them in 2023 to help curate activity, run classes and help showcase one of London’s most unique destinations.

Nestled underneath Waterloo station, Leake Street Arches is a celebration of urban art, dining and entertainment featuring eight former railway arches brought back to life with a community of independent restaurants, bars and entertainment spaces united in their approach to celebrating urban culture.

What makes it so special is that it adjoins London’s longest legal graffiti wall on Leake Street, which has made its name as a democratic cultural venue for street art following its launch at The Cans Festival, hosted by Banksy.

The winner will be named Artist in Residence for 2023 and work to create regular pieces of art on the tunnel walls, run introductory graffiti classes for the public and generally become a champion for the art form and Leake Street. The winner will also receive a paid commission to create a piece of art and play a key role in helping curate activity at the Arches.

How to Enter

To enter the competitions, entrants must submit their applications to info@leakestreetarches.london including the following:

a. Name and Contact Details
b. A theme to their residency and reasons for it
c. Three examples of the types/style of work they would produce if chosen
d. Any Artistic/Teaching Experience
e. Statement outlining the reason they should be the artist in residence for LSA and what it would mean (500 words).

The Competition will close to entries at 11pm December 23 2022, judging will take place in January 2023 and the announcement of a winner will be made by 27 February 2023 in time for the launch of Leake Street Arches’ Spring Season of activity.

This is an incredibly unique opportunity for someone to literally leave their mark on one of London’s most creative destinations. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about graffiti, urban culture and what they could achieve in the role.
