The Devonshire expands with private dining rooms by interior studio Macaulay Sinclair

RENOWNED interior architecture and design studio Macaulay Sinclair has collaborated with London’s most popular pub and Soho dining institution, The Devonshire, to craft a series of exquisite new private dining rooms.

Now open to the public, the expansion has added up to 90 covers to the pub’s offering, providing unique spaces for intimate gatherings.

The work involved the extension of the existing restaurant into the adjacent building on Sherwood Street in Soho, with a new, separate entrance for private diners. Macaulay Sinclair’s design vision encompasses three distinct private dining rooms, each boasting its own individual character and meticulous attention to detail.

Ian Roome, director at Macaulay Sinclair said: “It’s a real privilege to be working with this well-loved London establishment. With such an iconic, historic building, we wanted to ensure that the new space would reflect the building’s history, as well as the critically acclaimed food offering and truly British atmosphere that it has become revered for.”

The three dining rooms are spread across two floors of the building. On the third floor, two interconnected rooms, capable of hosting 25 and 35 guests respectively, form The Blue Room, illuminated by a pair of elegant three-tiered amber glass sconced chandeliers.

Ascending to the fourth floor, guests will discover The Bowie Room; a bold and intimate setting with walls drenched in a rich shade of red. This private dining space, accommodating 26 guests, features a pair of large vintage Holophane globe pendants, creating a warm and inviting ambience.

Inside the private dining rooms, wall panelling and vintage bentwood chairs complement The Devonshire’s curated artwork, ensuring a cohesive and stylish aesthetic that ties in with the existing restaurant.

Ian added: “Throughout the rooms, we incorporated reclaimed elements, including doors and a salvaged glazed screen, adding a layer of history and character. Vintage merbau parquet flooring flows seamlessly through the private dining rooms, corridors, and stairwell landings, complemented by merbau treads and cast brass nosing on the stairs.”

The new Sherwood Street entrance features a bold gloss-painted green timber shopfront with cream detailing and bespoke hand-painted signage. This leads into the lobby, which features a handcrafted black and white marble mosaic, that incorporates the restaurant’s distinctive stag motif.

Adding a unique visual connection to the existing pub, a bespoke sign-written one-way mirror has been integrated within The Devonshire bar, offering a glimpse from the new private dining room entrance into the pub. A new beer hatch within The Devonshire’s oak panelling also facilitates seamless service to guests as they arrive.

Oisín Rogers, pub landlord and co-founder at The Devonshire, said: “These rooms are about having spaces where guests who need privacy can feel comfortable, safe, happy and well looked after – that same sense of timeless quality and generosity – just in more intimate spaces. We want people to feel like they’ve discovered something special, while still being properly looked after and leaving us with great memories.”

The Devonshire private dining rooms opened in September and are located at 5 Sherwood Street, Soho, London, W1F 7BW.
