The piano Freddie Mercury used to write Queen hits is now on display in London at The Cumberland Hotel

From 15th – 27th September, Propstore’s Freddie Mercury’s Yamaha C3 Grand Piano will take centre stage in the lobby of The Cumberland Hotel in Marble Arch, giving music fans the rare chance to get up close to one of the most fascinating pieces of Queen history to come to market in recent years.

Originally housed at Munich’s legendary Musicland Studios, the piano was played by Freddie Mercury while composing solo material and Queen hits including Crazy Little Thing Called Love, as well as during recording sessions for The Game, Hot Space and The Works. Over the years it has also been played by an extraordinary roll call of artists including The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Donna Summer and Bryan Ferry.

Now estimated at £200,000–£400,000, the piano is up for auction and is being billed as the most significant Freddie Mercury-related artefact to come to market since the landmark 2023 auction of his personal collection.

Before the piano goes to auction it is on display at The Cumberland Hotel from 15th – 27th September. In this limited time fans can catch the piano in the flesh at the hotel and even enjoy a limited edition Freddie Mercury cocktail at The Cumberland’s SOUND Bar. The cocktail named, We Will Rock You (£15.75) features Vodka, Cointreau, sugar, lemon juice, topped with tonic and lemon garnish, as a nod to Freddie Mercury’s favorite tipple.

On Wednesday 16 September 2026 between 6:30 and 8:30pm, the hotel will also host ‘A Night With The Piano That Helped Shape Rock History’, featuring a talk from a Propstore music memorabilia expert exploring the piano’s remarkable history and significance, alongside guest pianists who will bring the instrument to life.

And the piano is just the beginning. From 23–27 September, The Cumberland will open its doors for a free five day exhibition ahead of Propstore’s Music Live Auction. Items from the Reinhold Mack Queen Collection plus over a hunder other incredible pieces from the wider music auction catalogue, will go on public display, giving visitors the opportunity to view the pieces up close and discover the stories behind some of the auction’s most significant lots.
