The Sun Tavern celebrates Poitín Day | Reviving Ireland’s original spirit in East London

Cult East London cocktail bar and home to London’s largest collection of Irish whiskey, The Sun Tavern, is celebrating Poitín Day once again this November, an annual tribute to Ireland’s oldest and most storied spirit. Nestled on Bethnal Green Road, the bar has long championed poitín, helping to bring the once-outlawed Irish spirit back into the spotlight and onto backbars across the world.

Since first marking the occasion several years ago, The Sun Tavern has played a key role in turning Poitín Day into a global celebration of Irish craft and culture. What began as a small homage in East London has since inspired bartenders and drinkers from Dublin to New York to raise a glass on 18th November each year in honour of this unique native spirit.

To mark this year’s festivities, The Sun Tavern will host its annual Poitín Day Party, featuring bespoke cocktails crafted from rare bottles and Irish music throughout the evening. Guests can enjoy a cocktail menu including the Belfast Coffee showcasing serves made with Bán, Micil, and Killowen poitín, each highlighting the character and versatility of these trailblasing Irish distillers.

In addition, visitors are invited to a free poitín tasting from 6:30pm, offering the perfect chance to discover the spirit’s rich diversity and deep roots in Irish heritage.

“Poitín has always been a spirit with soul, it tells the story of Ireland’s resilience, craft, and character,” says Andy Kerr, Owner of The Sun Tavern. “It’s been a privilege to watch Poitín Day grow from a local tradition into something that’s celebrated far and wide.”

Home to the world’s largest collection of Poitín and nearly 300 Irish Whiskies, The Sun Tavern remains London’s spiritual home for authenticity and innovation, a neighbourhood bar where the past and present pour perfectly together.
