Tice: Burnham can’t hand power to mayors while handing it back to Brussels

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice has vowed to oppose the Prime Minister’s plan to reverse Brexit and said it is at odds with his comments about devolution and handing more powers to regions in Britain.

He told the Camilla Tominey Show on GB News: “Well, obviously, we’ll campaign against because we are the original Brexiteers. Nigel, of course, has been leading the debate on this for many decades.

“And look, in terms of Andy Burnham once again flip-flopping, in a sense, I mean, he’s just written off a whole bunch of Midlands and Northern seats that they need to win in order to win the next general election, because actually people still want Brexit to be done and done properly, and it’s only Reform who can be trusted to do that.

“Because as you know, the Tories they took us out of the EU, but they didn’t believe in it, and then they didn’t do the job properly, and that’s why no one will trust them to do the job properly another time around. They’ll trust us because we are the original core conviction believers.”

He added: “We’re a great band when it comes to winning referendums to get out of the European Union. That is for sure. Whatever it is, we will lead it because we are trusted to do the job properly.

“The Tories had their chance on this; they blew it. They can be sort of junior add-ons, but frankly, the country wants if you’re going to do a job, do it properly and we believe that the Brexiteers want the job done properly.

“So look, if Mr Burnham wants to revisit this, I mean, frankly, the country is going bankrupt, the bond markets are rebelling, we face blackouts. The last thing we should be talking about is creating another huge divisive debate when you’ve got a prime minister on one hand says he wants to sort of devolve power down and unite people, and then he wants to give loads and loads of power back to people in Brussels, along with a £40 billion a year cheque.

“The whole thing is preposterous, absolutely absurd.”
