Tobias Ellwood MP to face Commons no confidence vote over Taliban endorsement

MP Tobias Ellwood is to face a no confidence vote to remove him as chairman of the Commons Defence Committee over comments he made in support of the Afghan Taliban, GB News understands.

The Conservative MP caused outrage over his appearance in a video in July in which he lauded the Taliban in a video and he later apologised.

GB News Political Editor Christopher Hope said: “Many think it was a rush of blood to the head. He’s a decent man, Tobais Ellwood, he’s a patriot, so he’s trying to be helpful and constructive.

“He does take these tangental leaps sometimes in policy thinking…that job is one of the senior jobs on the back benches in Parliament and pays £16,000 a year on top of his MP salary of £85,000 or so, so it’s a significant job he has there.

“The MPs feel that he goes a bit rogue sometimes on his comments, he goes away from where the committee is, often committees should be consulted before their chairman speaks out, so that’s their concern.”

He added: “They call it this Taliban tourism video and they think he went too far. He put his video online himself. He took it down. He apologised, but I think this for many it’s a step too far.

“What’s happened since then is that the MPs put down a vote of no confidence in Mr Ellwood. We remember those days and Boris Johnson votes of no confidence.

“The MPs, they can vote on that from tomorrow, Thursday, and the idea today is the last chance from Mr Ellwood to plead for his job, to plead for that confidence.

“So, it’s a dramatic moment in Parliament because of the seniority of that position which Mr Elwood holds.”
