Wandsworth to name its sporting heroes at awards ceremony

Wandsworth Council’s Active Wandsworth Awards is all set to celebrate the dedication and achievements for the local sporting community at the annual Active Wandsworth Awards evening on Friday 3rd March. Now in its 25th year, the ceremony will reflect on the 2022 sporting year and a glittering list of nominees have been announced.

The evening will be hosted by Sky Sports News presenter and reporter, Emma Paton, who will give recognition to the individual athletes, clubs, organisations, coaches and volunteers who are fundamental to grass roots sport and physical activity in Wandsworth being as successful as it is. Special guests, Commonwealth Beach Volleyball medallists Javier and Joaquin Bello will also be in attendance helping us celebrate our local heroes.

The high standard of nominations across the ten award categories demonstrates not only the incredible sporting talent in Wandsworth but also the amazing commitment of grass roots organisations, who have shown exceptional dedication to their community.

The Sports Person and Junior Sports Person categories are abrim with phenomenal talent including Olympic athletes and athletes breaking barriers at club level, all the way through to the world stage.

Several awards will reflect on how volunteers and community organisations not only provide traditional playing opportunities but how their connections with the community support those who have experienced inequalities and many barriers over the last couple of years, emphasizing the vital role that being active plays in physical and mental wellbeing.

Across the ten categories, we will see honours given for Active School of the year, Young Volunteer and Volunteer of the year, The Mayor’s Award, Coach/Instructor of the year (Sponsored by Footy Addicts), Outstanding Contribution to Sport /Physical activity, Sports Club/Organisation of the Year. Physical Activity Project of the Year (Sponsored by Enable), Junior Sports Person of the year and Sports Person of the Year (Sponsored by Places Leisure).

Wandsworth’s cabinet member for the environment Judi Gasser, said: “I am very much looking forward to seeing this year’s nominees in what is likely to be an amazing ceremony on March 3rd. All on the shortlist are very much deserving of their nomination across the ten awards. Now, more than ever, sport and physical activity play an important part in all our lives and to recognise everyone, from the talented athlete to the amazing coaches and volunteers who make it happen, is so important.”
