Whizz Kidz, the UK’s leading charity for young wheelchair users, is thrilled to announce the launch of an invaluable resource for wheelchair users navigating the exciting journey of attending university. Timed to coincide with the highly anticipated A-Level results day, this comprehensive A-Z Guide is designed by young wheelchair users to empower other young wheelchair users with the information and support they need to transition seamlessly into higher education. Whizz Kidz are calling on all universities to review their provision for young wheelchair users in light of the information shared and to share the guide with any wheelchair users within their institutions.

As the higher education landscape continues to evolve, Whizz Kidz recognises the unique challenges faced by wheelchair users who are embarking on this significant phase of their lives. The A-Z Guide is a groundbreaking initiative that provides a wealth of practical advice, insider tips, and guidance tailored to the specific needs of wheelchair users.

The Kidz Board, a group of young wheelchair users, who each represent a different area of the UK have worked tirelessly on this project. They meet up several times a year, in person or online, and their job is to make sure their voices, and young people from their areas, are at the heart of every decision Whizz Kidz makes. The Kidz Board initially designed a survey for young wheelchair users to hear about their experiences of education and work. Based on that feedback, and some of their own experiences, they have produced the guide full of tips and things to think about when going to university. The aim of the guide is to make other young wheelchair users to know they are not alone, and support young people in their journey to and through university.

Georgia who is a current member of the Kidz Board said;
‘’The A-Z guide is important as it’s a resource that students can use and refer back to at any point in their university / higher education journey. From their very first application, before they’ve even set foot on campus, to graduation day there is something in there for almost every situation. We want other students to know that they are not alone and there is support out there. If something like the A-Z guide existed when I was at university some of the challenges I faced perhaps wouldn’t have happened’’.

She added;

‘’I faced some discrimination and ableism within my university halls during my Masters year which was quite a difficult time. Having something like the A-Z guide to know there is support out there, to remind me that I do have places to go and people to talk to, and that there are spaces where I could be myself would have really helped. I think the definition and use of the term Zebra in the guide is a good thing to acknowledge. Everyone has a different university experience and perspective, it’s all about making the experience as worthwhile and beneficial as you can’’.
