WIDE AWAKE Festival returns in 2023 with Osees, Ty Segall, Gilla band and much more
Wide Awake Festival, quickly becoming synonymous as one of London’s most unique festivals, situated in Brockwell Park, has announced an incredible first wave of acts for 2023. Taking place on May 27th 2023 the festival will see the likes of Erol Alkan, A Place To Bury Strangers, Arooj Aftab, Habibi Funk, Sunset Rollercoaster, Gilla Band, Lebanon Hanover, Osees, Ty Segall, Glass Beams, Madmadmad and Σstella perform, plus many more TBA.
Brought to life by some of Field Day’s original founders, Bad Vibrations, LNZRT and the creators behind some of London’s most iconic, small music venues: MOTH Club and The Shacklewell Arms this festival has been consummated through an adoration of music and a long history of exhilarating live shows across each of the sites.
Celebrated for their unmissable line-ups of leftfield indie, post-punk, electronica, techno, and jazz curated by a selection of the capital’s most essential promoters. Wide Awake pride themselves on highlighting some of the best established and up-and-coming artists in the world today.
In-demand Taiwanese act Sunset Rollercoaster, renowned for their nostalgic vibes, will be performing alongside festival favourite Erol Alkan and the explosive garage-punk band Osees. Also joining the star-studded bill are Irish noise rockers Gilla Band, Berlin-based Habibi Funk bringing with the eclectic sounds from the Arab world, legendary New York rockers A Place To Be Bury Strangers not to mention Ty Segall, the Californian dreamer bringing his psych-influenced garage rock to this year’s event, with many more acts still to be announced.
Over the years the festival has played host to some of the most prestigious names in music and 2022’s lineup was no exception to that, with the likes of Primal Scream present Screamadelica, Floating Points, Idles, Lena Willikens, black midi, Black Country, New Road, Fat White Family, Yard Act, Overmono, Fatoumata Diawara, Bicep, Caribou, Leon Vynehall, Working Men’s Club, Alewya, Call Super, Louise Chen, Moxie, Optimo and Young Marco dominating the festival.
With equality and diversity being a core to their ethos, Wide Awake has taken on The Keychange Pledge and are committed to a lineup consisting of at least 50% women or underrepresented genders, reflected in their 2022 line up which featured acts with at least one underrepresented gender member.
Wide Awake Festival Booker & Co-Founder, Keith Miller, says –
“There’s a feeling amongst us all at Wide Awake that the 2023 lineup is the most varied and interesting so far. Osees and Ty Segall are the types of catalysts that inspire a generation.
“We’re lucky enough to also have the next gen with Glass Beams, Estella and a whole cohort of brilliant new acts we know you’ll all become massive fans of. And A Place To Bury Strangers represent everything about DIY music and that ethic. Wide Awake evolved out of a warehouse festival they played and we cannot wait to have them back.
“The best thing? This is just the first announcement. We’ve got plenty more we’re really excited to share with you.”
Wide Awake aims to provide a distinctive counter-culture experience like no other London-based festival. It will champion independence, as well as include a strong policy for sustainability where it will reduce its carbon footprint through the following actions:
Wide Awake Positive Policy
Bury zero waste in landfill
Leave no trace of litter
Ban single use plastic across the site
Only use compostable plastic and cutlery
Only provide ethically sourced food
Operate a cup deposit scheme that doesn’t rip fans off
Recycle all trader & back of house waste
Only permit biodegradable stage effects
The Positive Policy debuts the festival’s positive actions in an effort to help our ecosystem and change the way in which live music events take responsibility with a set of strict rules around the use of HVO Fuel, eco-toilets, banning single use plastic, providing ethically sourced food, permitting only biodegradable stage effects, and much more. On the day of the festival, Wide Awake will bring a tight and titillating curation of sustainability focused happenings within a freshly conceived concept, the Climate Cafe – an excitingly dense afternoon which will include a chance for participants to experiment with a carbon calculator to discover their personal emissions, creatively build their vision of a utopian/dystopian future, enjoy an exploration of solastalgia through short stories and more. Please see full Positive Policy here.
In-line with our overall commitments to embedding sustainability into the festival, in 2023 we shall again be supporting EarthPercent with a charitable donation. Founded by Brian Eno, EarthPercent supports the most impactful projects and organisations addressing the climate crisis around the World. For more info see earthpercent.org
