With 2023 the year of the TV reboot, Brits crown Del Boy and Rodney as their comeback kings

As the UK prepares for a feast of Christmas repeats and a new year filled with TV reboots, more Brits want to see Only Fools and Horses come back than any other show.

It’s been 19 years since Del Boy and Rodney last appeared on our screens on Christmas Day but one in six (16%) of us want to see the Trotters return.

The classic show finished ahead of fellow sitcoms Blackadder (13%), Fawlty Towers (13%) and Yes Minister (12%) out of the most popular UK programmes of the last 70 years, research by streaming service WatchTVAbroad.com1 reveals.

Earlier this year it was announced that 90s’ sports entertainment show Gladiators, reality TV series Big Brother and Survivor, as well as police drama The Bill, would all be getting a reboot in 2023.

Detective hit Sherlock (12%), which ran from 2010 to 2017, was the top contemporary show on people’s wish lists, with The Office (11%) the only other series launched after 2000 to appear in the top 10. This is Your Life (10%), first screened in 1955 was the oldest programme to make the top 10, suggesting there may be life in the Big Red Book yet.

Some shows are clearly divisive when it comes to their present-day appeal. While 12% of women want to see Blind Date return, this fell to 7% among men. Similarly, comedy drama Auf Wiedersehen, Pet was one of the top choices for men (11%), yet had only 7% of female fans.

Among young adults The Office was the clear favourite, with Ricky Gervais’s cringe-worthy comedy selected by one in five (20%) people aged 18-24, ahead of Sherlock (18%) and Grange Hill (13%). The show, which helped put the Berkshire town of Slough on the map, was also the top pick for people living in the South East.

Meanwhile, millennials and those in Generation X clearly have fond memories of flight simulators and assault courses, as quiz The Krypton Factor was selected by 15% of both the 35-44 and 45-54 age groups to make their top 3s.
