London’s gym to be overcapacity upon reopening

Before we get back to the full state of normality, gym and fitness facility lovers will be able to return from April 12th, but recent data has shown that London’s gyms are going to be overcapacity.

The data has come from Discount Supplements, who recently set out to find the fittest region of the UK. Within their data research, they concluded how many fitness facilities (as registered on Google My Business) there are per 100,000 capacity within each region.

Their data shows that despite London’s 9,426,000 population, there is only 1 fitness facility per 100,000 of them.

London has always been known for being a busy city with a constant growing population. When COVID-19’s lockdown restrictions were relaxed last year, and gyms were able to reopen for a while on 25th July, Covid cases once again started to rise in the capital, especially within the City of London.
On 3rd August 2020, newspaper headlines stated “London is at a “critical time” in fighting Covid-19, a world health chief warned today as figures showed the number of new cases edging up in two thirds of boroughs.” (Evening Standard)

The London population, per 100,000, has over 450 gym memberships, as discovered by Discount Supplements. In a 2020 national fitness survey, 35% of people said that they would also consider buying a gym membership post lockdown.

With London’s gym membership’s predicted to rise for only a small number of fitness facilities per population, should the London be worried for another potential COVID-19 spike on April 12th?

Social distancing measures will still be in place upon reopening, however with the lack of space for the growing population, can social distancing be abided by everyone? The government believes all UK adults will have had their first COVID-19 vaccination by the end of July – but with gyms opening almost 3 months before this, is everyone really safe to return to their normal fitness lifestyle?
