Redrow help local school pupils to imagine homes of the future with time capsule burial
Redrow‘s Eastern team spent a fun and educational day at their Great Wisley Park development, with 12 pupils from a local Haverhill school, Barnardiston Hall. The day centred around each student burying a time capsule containing work from children across the school (aged 6 to 12), before an informative session spent discovering what careers in the housing industry can look like and imagining future homes.
Prior to the visit, pupils across the school had been tasked with producing work for the capsule. They created a mixture of futuristic home recipes and poetry, paintings and letters, which were included in the buried box, alongside technical drawings of The Parklands provided by Redrow, and a newspaper of the day.
The time capsule not only provided the pupils with the opportunity to contemplate creative ideas for homes of the future, but also the chance to gain a greater understanding of the mechanics behind construction work. Redrow also invited the children to observe a digger in action as the capsule’s site was dug, before allowing each pupil time in the driver’s seat, a thoroughly enjoyed surprise!
Mark Becker, Regional Director at Redrow furthered the celebration of the children’s creativity through the launch of a competition extended to the entire school. The competition encourages all pupils to design their ideal home through a range of media (including Lego, painting, junk modelling and drawing), with the Redrow Eastern team looking forward to seeing their creations, and presenting both the winner and the runner-up prizes for their outstanding design.
The 12 pupils in attendance on the day then heard the Redrow Eastern team talk about their careers in the housing industry, providing valuable insight into the work they do at Redrow.
The day concluded with a guided visit for the pupils around an exclusive show home at The Parklands. Many pupils were excited to see their predictions of future homes brought to fruition in the show home.
Kerry McCoubrey, Sales Director at Redrow Eastern, said: “We are hugely grateful to have had the chance to spend time with some of the pupils at Barnardiston Hall, and were inspired by their creativity and imagination. We hope the day provided them with the opportunity to learn about how homes are made, and encourage them to take part in the competition designed by Mark Becker, which will celebrate the talent of Barnardiston Hall pupils.
It was a real privilege to afford the opportunity of burying a time capsule with the pupils, and to put our work alongside theirs made it an important and special event. The day was a wonderful way to celebrate The Parklands development, and we hope to have shared our excitement for the housing landscape of the future with the younger generation.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to every teacher and student at Barnardiston Hall Preparatory School for the time and effort they put into organising the time capsule, and we thank them for visiting us for this special event, the legacy of which we are delighted to leave for generations to come.”
Gavin Sinnott, Headmaster at Barnardiston Hall Preparatory School, also commented: “We would like to thank the entire Redrow Eastern team for the day they provided for our pupils, and the range of events they co-ordinated. It was fantastic to engage our pupils in imagining and designing homes of the future, a task they thoroughly enjoyed, alongside the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on The Parklands development.
“It was a hugely successful day, our pupils had great fun during the visit to the show home and particularly loved the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of a digger! We look forward to seeing the creativity of exhibited in the Redrow competition, and hope that the time capsule will provide enjoyment and interest to a similar group of pupils far down the line, when it is unearthed.”
