A book co-edited by Professor Peter John CBE, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of West London (UWL) and Principal of Ruskin College, and Professor Graeme Atherton, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Regional Engagement at UWL and Vice-Principal of Ruskin College, is one of three shortlisted for the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Book of the Year Award.
Bringing together leading voices
Published in June 2025, ‘Making Equal: New Visions for Opportunity and Growth’ brings together leading voices from politics, academia and the voluntary sector to address one of the UK’s most pressing challenges: inequality.
The collection of essays explores how a fairer and more equal society can be created, offering fresh perspectives and practical recommendations for reform across education, welfare, justice, economic development and regional governance. Challenging conventional thinking, the book presents innovative ideas for tackling social and economic disparities and expanding opportunity across the country.
Contributions from influential figures
‘Making Equal’ features contributions from a range of influential figures, including Lord David Blunkett, Baroness Hilary Armstrong, Lord John Bird, founder of the Big Issue, Phil Collins, former chief speechwriter to Tony Blair, Justine Greening, former Secretary of State for Education, Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, and Jon Cruddas, former MP for Dagenham and Rainham.
The book examines a wide range of proposals, including the creation of a new Ministry of Poverty, approaches to modernising further and higher education, reforms to taxation and economic regulation, and new strategies to combat digital exclusion.
New thinking on social equity
The publication reflects the mission of the Ruskin Institute for Social Equity (RISE) and the wider commitment of UWL and Ruskin College to advancing social mobility, opportunity and inclusive growth.
Professor Graeme Atherton said:
“At a time when questions of opportunity, fairness and social mobility are more important than ever, ‘Making Equal’ brings together a remarkable range of perspectives and ideas. We are delighted that the book has been recognised by BERA, and we hope it contributes to national discussions on how to build a more equitable society.”
