For more than a decade, Bread Ahead has celebrated the first wheat harvest alongside long-standing flour partner Marriage’s Millers and Southwark Cathedral, bringing together baking, faith and community in a unique Borough Market tradition.

On Friday 7 August, the bakery will once again mark Lammas Day with a blessing of its Borough Market Bakery and Baking School, a ceremonial bread procession and a special Eucharist at Southwark Cathedral, before welcoming guests back for complimentary coffee and doughnuts.

Lammas, or ‘Loaf Mass’, derives from the Anglo-Saxon hlāf-mæsse and is one of Britain’s oldest harvest traditions. Celebrated as a thanksgiving for the first fruits of the wheat harvest, it saw a newly baked loaf presented before God during Mass. While the ceremony largely disappeared following the Reformation, the tradition has been revived in recent years, with Bread Ahead proudly baking the Lammas loaf used during the service.

Since opening its Borough Market bakery in 2013, Bread Ahead has worked with Marriage’s Millers, making the annual celebration a fitting tribute to a partnership built on exceptional flour, craftsmanship and a shared passion for baking.

From 11.00am, The Very Reverend Mark Oakley, Dean of Southwark, will visit Bread Ahead’s Borough Market Bakery and Baking School to bless both spaces before giving a reading at the bakery. A selection of freshly baked artisan loaves, including the Lammas loaf, will then be carried in procession through Borough Market to Southwark Cathedral, led by the Dean.

The Lammas Eucharist begins at 11.45am, with the congregation gathering first at Bread Ahead before walking together to the Cathedral. During the service, part of the specially baked Lammas loaf will be used as the Eucharistic bread, continuing a tradition that has been observed for centuries.

Following the service, visitors are invited back to Bread Ahead’s Borough Market bakery to enjoy complimentary coffee and doughnuts, available until stocks last.

The annual celebration is open to everyone, with visitors encouraged to gather at Bread Ahead, join the procession to Southwark Cathedral, take part in the Lammas Eucharist and return afterwards for coffee and doughnuts.
