Brits priorities have changed with 62% now looking for something different in a house, compared to 10 years ago
New research from Samsung Electronics UK has revealed that 62% of the nation searching for a property today are now looking for something different in a future property to what was of interest to them a decade ago – including a bigger kitchen for entertaining (36%) and a fast Wi-Fi connection (29%).
‘Home Movers’ in the UK are on the rise with over a third (34%) looking to move home in the next year, with a quarter (25%) of those having already put their current home on sale.
With the 26th August1 being reported as the most popular day for moving house this year, searches have been on the rise over the summer months and many now have different priorities, which have shifted over the years.
In terms of what the British public would rather have when moving house, the study revealed that Brits are looking for outdoor space over a place to park their car, with more than two-thirds (69%) choosing a garden over a parking space and nearly half (49%) picking a house with a park nearby over one that is close to public transport (43%).
Surprisingly over half (53%) of people would rather a spare bedroom than a home office with just over a third (38%).
When it comes to technology in the home, nearly half (46%) would rather a TV that doubles up as artwork than traditional picture frames (32%). Home Movers are also seeking out other home appliances such as:
61% would rather a cordless vacuum than a standard vacuum (30%)
40% would choose a smart steamer over a traditional steamer (30%)
57% would opt for an American-style fridge over a wine cooler (26%)
In addition to this, whilst 60% of those polled would like to have a completely digitally connected home where the house is connected to devices that can be controlled remotely via a smartphone or computer, 38% wouldn’t know where to start when trying to create a smart home.
Kate Watson-Smyth, Interiors Guru shares her insights and tips for Home Movers: “It’s clear that the last two years has had a lasting effect on what we want from our homes with over a third of us looking to move house in the next year. The desire for a bigger kitchen reflects the fact that we plan to entertain at home more often and two thirds of us would now rather have a garden over a parking space. This desire to make the most of our homes as welcoming spaces for friends and family is also reflected in the fact that over half of us would rather have a spare bedroom than a home office.
Moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do so the key is organisation. Start as soon as you can by clearing out cupboards and getting rid of things you no longer need either by recycling, donating or taking to the tip. Then once you have moving dates locked in you should be left with a tidier house with no clutter so you can get on with the business of packing.”
Tanya Weller, Marketing Director of Home Appliances at Samsung Electronics (UK & Ireland) Ltd., said: “With the rise in home movers, many now have a different checklist compared to ten years ago. The last two years have made people think about what they really want, with outdoor space being a key priority. In addition to this, home appliances that are convenient for families are hugely desired – from Samsung’s Bespoke Jet™ Pro Extra, which is a powerful, light, and efficient cordless vacuum cleaner with a built-in clean station that automatically empties dust and delivers hygienic cleaning, to our most energy-efficient RS8000 American-style fridge freezer on the market2 that offers a sleek design and increased storage space for food.”
With 53% of respondents opting for a spare bedroom over a home office, products such as the Samsung M8 Smart Monitor, means Home Movers don’t need to choose between the two. The M8 is the ultimate space-saving solution for work and play, allowing users to enjoy a variety of OTT services3, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV via Wi-Fi without having to connect to a PC or TV.
What’s more, with Home Movers keen to incorporate style into their homes, products such as Samsung’s Frame TV and Bespoke Refrigerator range offer just this. Combining state-of-the-art TV technology with inventive, yet equally sophisticated design, The Frame looks just as striking on, or off. Samsung’s Bespoke range encompasses the latest trends of modularity and personalisation in the home, with units that can be customised to suit individual styles and storage needs.
