The number of people using GLP-1 weight-loss medications has risen significantly in recent years. Currently, an estimated 1.5 million people are accessing GLP-1 treatment privately, while NHS England has seen prescriptions grow by 900% since 2020*1. However, an estimated 80% of users gain the weight back after they complete their GLP-1 treatment, often citing lack of support or lifestyle factors*2.
Recognising the growing issue between results and support, Parkwood Leisure has developed a 12-week pilot course at Crook Log Leisure Centre aimed at people who are considering, currently using or have previously used GLP-1 weight loss medications. While designed with this cohort in mind, the programme is also open to anyone over 18 with a BMI over 25 who wants to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The programme bridges a clear gap in follow up support, helping users transition from weight loss supported by medication to a lifestyle-led, sustainable approach. Rather than promoting restrictive diets or quick fixes, the programme combines expert-led guidance in nutrition, mindset and movement to support long-term success.
Katie Lupton, Head of Health and Wellbeing at Parkwood Leisure, comments: “We know that many people are turning to new medications to help manage their weight, which can offer great results. However, what we are seeing is that many users re-gain the weight post GLP-1 use. Long-term success depends on building healthy habits that last, and utilising tools that offer both physical and mental support mechanisms. This pilot programme at Crook Log Leisure Centre gives people the knowledge, structure and support they need to make sustainable changes, and to feel empowered in their own journey toward better health. If successful, we hope to expand the programme to other centres so more people in local communities can benefit from this support.”
