London’s most talked-about bakery is bringing a taste of Mexico to London this Halloween, as Espolòn Tequila takes over TOAD for Día de Muertos, a time-honoured Mexican and Latin American holiday where families gather to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. For two days only, Peckham locals can get their hands on limited-edition Pan de Muerto (“Bread of the Dead”) pastries and a taste of an Espolòn Paloma, as the bakery transforms into a colourful celebration of life, death and dough.
With queues often snaking down Peckham Road, TOAD has earned cult status for its inventive bakes and experimental flavours. Now, in partnership with Espolòn, the bakery is tapping into the UK’s growing love of Mexican culture (Day of the Dead searches rose by 75% last year, while interest in tequila jumped by 20% over the same period).
Across London, celebrations like Camden Market’s Day of the Dead Festival and Columbia Road’s annual event, which attracts around 3,000 visitors, show just how eagerly Brits are embracing the spirit of Día de Muertos.
Together, TOAD and Espolòn will channel that energy into an unforgettable two-day takeover – blending Mexican tradition, bold artistry and award-winning tequila for a taste of the holiday in the heart of Peckham.
Created in collaboration with chef and food historian Chloe-Rose Crabtree, the limited-edition menu reimagines classic Mexican treats with TOAD’s trademark creativity. With food being such an integral part of the holiday, the baked goods have been inspired by the traditional bakes that are created in Mexico and then placed on ‘ofrendas’ or alters as a way to give loved ones a taste of their favourite treats. Each bake is designed to pair perfectly with Espolòn’s award-winning tequila and the brand’s signature Paloma cocktail, served free to visitors on the day.
The Limited-Edition Menu Includes:
· Pan de Muerto Tradicional: The classic “Bread of the Dead”, a sweet, light, and citrusy yeast bread decorated with bone-shaped dough pieces traditionally symbolising the cycle of life and death
· Pan de Muerto Relleno: A filled version of the traditional bread, featuring a rich, spiced filling
· Savoury Tamale-Croissant: A unique mashup combining the flaky texture of a buttery croissant with the rich, savoury fillings of a traditional Mexican tamale
· Champurrado: A rich, thick, chocolate-based warm drink served during the holiday
Beyond the menu, TOAD Bakery will be completely transformed by Espolòn. Expect to see Espolòn’s calaveras (skeletons) perched outside, vibrant papel picado banners draped across the shopfront and colourful murals inspired by José Guadalupe Posada, the legendary Mexican artist whose work inspired Espolòn’s labels. A small run of limited-edition t-shirts will also be up for grabs, celebrating the collaboration’s bold design and rebellious spirit.
The Espolòn x TOAD Día de Muertos Takeover will run for two days only, from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November, while stocks last at TOAD Bakery – 44 Peckham Rd, London SE5 8PX.
