A key milestone has been reached at landmark development Stroudley Walk, Bromley-by-Bow, as Poplar HARCA officially receives the first affordable homes, delivered with nationwide placemaker Muse and construction partner McAleer & Rushe.
Located between Bruce Road and Bromley High Street, Stroudley Walk is a 50% affordable, mixed-use neighbourhood that is bringing new homes, shops and public space to the heart of Tower Hamlets.
Once complete, it will provide:
274 new long-term homes for local residents, including 115 for social rent
A reimagined high street with shops and civic spaces
A new pocket park and part-pedestrianised public space
A new community hub
The delivery of 274 new homes makes a valuable contribution to the GLA’s housing delivery targets, and supports the mayor’s vision for accessible, high-quality housing across London.
The scheme was made possible through Muse’s partnerships with Poplar HARCA, McAleer & Rushe, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and demonstrates the value of public and private sector collaboration to achieve large scale and inclusive urban regeneration.
The completion of the first two blocks marks the end of the first phase. The third block will complete by the end of October, with the remaining block due to complete in the New Year.
With a large number of families with neurodiverse children on the waiting list for social housing in the area, a number of homes have been designed to support autistic children and their families, through sensory-friendly features that foster calm and comfort.
Historically a disconnected thoroughfare, the regeneration of Stroudley Walk repositions it as a central, welcoming link between schools, homes and local businesses, becoming a social, safe and sustainable anchor for the neighbourhood.
The area’s cultural legacy is also being recognised. Sylvia Pankhurst gave her first speech at Stroudley Walk in 1913, and Mahatma Gandhi stayed nearby during his visit to London in 1931. These stories have inspired new artworks, including a mural developed with Bow Arts and local school children, placing heritage and identity at the heart of the new neighbourhood.
The scheme is being delivered by contractor McAleer & Rushe and designed by RMA Architects. Community input from more than 500 local people has helped shape a place where homes, streets and public spaces respond to local needs.
McAleer & Rushe and Muse have also delivered a range of community benefits alongside construction. These include careers workshops for over 200 local students, work placements, donations to local health and wellbeing programmes, and volunteering, helping to deliver lasting impact beyond the buildings themselves.
