Everything you need to know about London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone

London’s toxic air costs the capital up to £3.7bn each year, contributes to thousands of early deaths, and is stunting the growth of children’s lungs. Cleaning up London’s air will benefit everyone, and make the capital an even better place to live and do business.

Road transport is responsible for 50 per cent of air pollutants. On 8 April 2019 the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will start in central London to reduce harmful road transport emissions.

The ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, within the same area as the current Congestion Charge Zone and in addition to the Congestion Charge. From 8 April, vehicles driving in this zone will need to meet tighter exhaust emissions standards or pay a daily charge to travel within the ULEZ. To support micro-businesses and low-income Londoners to switch to cleaner vehicles, the Mayor has also announced a £48 million scrappage scheme.

Many organisations are already taking action to ensure their vehicles comply with the ULEZ and so avoid the charge. This includes by upgrading their vehicles, reorganising their fleets, and consolidating trips to reduce emissions and overall costs.
