As temperatures soar across the capital this week, Londoners are looking for ways to cool down, but one of the city’s natural cooling spots has been overlooked by many – the River Thames.
Experts from leading Thames passenger journey provider City Cruises reveal that temperatures on the river can feel up to 10% cooler than on land during periods of hot weather.
John Rowthorn, an expert from sightseeing cruise company City Cruises, said,
“Many people don’t realise the impact that the Thames can have on temperatures in central London during hot weather. Water heats up more slowly than roads and buildings, while the river’s openness allows air to circulate more freely, creating cooling breezes, which result in temperatures up to 3 degrees cooler on the water.
“During periods of extreme heat, even a small drop in temperature can make a noticeable difference to comfort levels. Spending time near the water, seeking out shaded areas and staying hydrated are all simple ways Londoners can help stay comfortable during a heatwave.”
The insight comes as much of the UK experiences some of the highest temperatures of the year, with health experts urging people to stay hydrated, seek shade where possible and avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.
City Cruises operates Thames cruises throughout the summer, giving visitors and Londoners alike the opportunity to enjoy the capital from the water du
