Former attorney general compares latest attack in Golders Green to 1930s

The former Attorney General has said further attacks on Jewish people in London have a similarity to the late 1930s and 40s.

Speaking on GB News, Sir Michael Ellis said: “Bearing in mind what that young man has said occurred, we have to ask ourselves, are there marauding gangs of people deliberately visiting the Golders Green area in order to find Jews to beat up?

“And in that, it has a similarity to the late 1930s and the 1940s that that victim is alluding to.

“And we know that that’s the case because we have seen multiple other attacks taking place in Golders Green.

“The police are not doing enough. The Crown Prosecution Service is not doing enough, and it isn’t good enough simply to throw more resources. Because although money is important, it isn’t building over higher walls and over higher degrees of security that will protect this minority.

“In London alone, there are something like 100 languages spoken, but it’s only the Hebrew language that seems to be provoking these four individuals and many others to beat up this lad at 2 o’clock in the morning who’s minding his own business making a phone call in the street.

“This is an absolute crisis of emergent national emergency proportions, as Kemi Badenoch has said, and it needs emergency action, because this could have resulted in the death of that individual.

“Kicking someone on the ground in some cases can result in death, and it hasn’t on this occasion, but it’s only through good fortune.

“This isn’t actually just about the future of Jews in this country, it’s about the future of this country, full stop.

“Because if we have this sort of thing that’s tolerated, repeatedly tolerated, where we’ve got numerous now episodes of antisemitism have been occurring, this is damaging to the very future of this country.

“This man happened to be visiting as a tourist. What about the reputation of this country around the world?”
