Frankie Dettori praised as ‘first truly complete jockey’

Jockey Frankie Dettori has been dubbed as the “first truly complete jockey”.

Racing journalist Brough Scott praised Dettori’s career as the Italian says goodbye to British horse racing today.

Appearing on GB News, Scott said: “He’s been unique both in and out of the saddle. The first truly complete jockey and the ultimate sometimes.

“He went up there last winter [America] and he was very successful. He is going back there and it’s a much easier life there in one sense and you don’t travel as much.

“Even though you have to be lighter – you have to be two kilos lighter out there. But he’s desperately trying to win the Kentucky Derby.

“If he gets going out there, which he wants to, then if he’s fit for the Kentucky Derby, if someone asked him to run the Derby, he’s going to come back, isn’t he?

“For Royal Ascot, there are always American horses that come for it and up to now, so I expect to see him there.

“It’s a bit like when you have a very famous uncle who emigrated to California, we aren’t ever going to see him again as his life here is over as a jockey.

“We are saying goodbye – but he’s very remarkable. He is a unique talent – there’s never ever been anybody who balances above a horse better than him.”

Dettori’s 35-year domestic career comes to an end today.
