Wembley Park, London’s globally renowned entertainment district and neighbourhood, has revealed a brand new, interactive art installation – ‘The Wishing Tree’ – taking over the iconic Spanish Steps this Christmas.
The giant vinyl mural, created by London studio, IWANT Design, is the latest artwork to adorn Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps, a key pedestrian route linking Wembley Stadium to the OVO Arena Wembley.
Rising up the famous staircase, ‘The Wishing Tree’ features a 30ft tall traditional Christmas tree, the height of two double decker buses, printed across the 58 steps.
Visitors of all ages can not only view but are also encouraged to interact with ‘The Wishing Tree’. Wishes can be added to the artwork by obtaining a Wishing Tree metallic coloured sticker, available from London Designer Outlet’s Guest Services, on which wishes can be handwritten and then placed onto the 300+ corresponding-coloured ‘fairy lights’ on the tree.
As each metallic sticker is placed, ‘The Wishing Tree’ will gradually and symbolically illuminate, catching the light from the festive light display along Wembley Park Boulevard and creating a glowing communal artwork.
Part of the free outdoor Art Trail at Wembley Park, ‘The Wishing Tree’, on display until early January 2026, will become a community-shaped, collective display of hundreds of individual wishes, and a key feature of the neighbourhood’s festive celebrations.
Claudio Giambrone, Head of Cultural Programming at Wembley Park, comments:“Community is always at the heart of Wembley Park with this latest art installation designed to bring people together this Christmas by participating in a free, shared cultural experience.”
Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps have hosted public artworks since 2018 and are now one of London’s most recognisable outdoor canvases. ‘The Wishing Tree’ launches after a year of global attention for the Steps courtesy of two viral installations – ‘YELLOW 25’, an artistic tribute in collaboration with Wembley Park X Pantone dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Coldplay’s hit song, Yellow, this summer and ‘Auras’ – the viral Taylor Swift mural unveiled by the Mayor of London to welcome her eight UK shows in summer 2024, which led to the ‘Swiftie Steps’ nickname.
John Gilsenan of IWANT Design, whose cultural portfolio includes work with Somerset House, South Bank London, Turner Contemporary and the National Trust, commented: “We are delighted to have created ‘The Wishing Tree’ for everyone to enjoy and engage with this Christmas. Wembley Park is known for delivering culture in unexpected places and we are proud to be able to contribute to that on the iconic Spanish Steps – wishes do indeed come true!”
‘The Wishing Tree’ is part of Wembley Park’s Christmas celebrations where the neighbourhood is welcoming all to enjoy London’s Big Festive Day Out this winter (27th Nov – 3rd Jan). From sparkling lights, a 20ft Gingerbread Arch light installation, Santa Claus-themed outdoor photo exhibition and street performances to festive markets, free Santa’s Grotto, kids Christmas party and winter dining, a host of activities provide something for everyone and every budget, all set within the walkable neighbourhood just 12 minutes from central London.
