GP FROM LONDON TO BE HONOURED AT THE PALACE OF WESTMINSTER IN THE PEOPLE‘S HONOURS

Dr Mohammed Abbas Khaki from London is to be recognised at the Palace of Westminster with the prestigious British Citizen Award (BCA) in recognition of his extraordinary endeavours. The British Citizen Award in partnership with One Stop, is now in its eighth year and recognises exceptional individuals who positively impact their communities throughout the country.

The January 2022 Presentation has been postponed due to current Government Guidelines, but Mohammed will be honoured on 24th March 2022 with The British Citizen Award for Services to Healthcare and will receive the coveted BCA Medal of Honour and invited to use the post-nominals BCAh as a legacy of their achievement.

Dr Khaki is a portfolio GP, holding roles as a media doctor, medical educator and international medical relief worker. His passion for inclusivity has led him to regularly conduct outreach work within hard-to-reach communities to address taboo subjects, facilitate blood donation and conduct medical screening. In 2012, accompanied by three colleagues, he started an international charity ‘The Who is Hussain Foundation’, which now has a global footprint of over 100 teams across 6 continents, making phenomenal changes to the communities and cities they serve.

Dr Khaki has assisted the development of polyclinics in Iraq, providing medical, dental and optical services, whilst establishing a mental health programme for two orphanages of over 1,000 children in Iraq. He was a first responder to the fire in Grenfell, and has also worked to serve the displaced populations across Bosnia, Calais, Lesbos, Tanzania and India, and most recently assisted with the Rohingya Refugee Crisis, helping to create a Fellowship in Refugee Medicine that has trained 99 doctors across 36 NGOs.

In response to the Covid-19 crisis Dr Khaki has doubled his efforts, joining the NHS frontline Covid efforts, helped to source and provide PPE to frontline workers and upscaled his charities global efforts to support those afflicted. He has also become an established and trusted health expert, working with NHS England, Public Health England and mainstream media outlets to tackle and address health misinformation, support the vaccine drive and provide expert opinion on health and wellbeing issues.

‘This year’s medallists have reminded us of how many amazing people are supporting our communities, especially during such a challenging time. At One Stop we serve many communities across the country, and we know how important voluntary work is to support those in need. We’re proud to be partnering with the BCA again and to play a small part in helping each medallist to be recognised. Our congratulations go to all honourees’, said Jonny McQuarrie, from BCA partner One Stop.

The Medal presentation will be hosted by TV presenter Tim Vincent, and attended by BCA Patron Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and Baroness Caroline Cox. The British Citizen Award (BCA) was established in 2015 to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on their communities and society. The BCA recognises true community heroes who would otherwise likely be overlooked. Dubbed ‘The People’s Honours’, many recipients have subsequently been selected to receive a Queen’s Honour after their endeavours have been recognised with a BCA.

Each medallist has a day to remember befitting their achievements. At the Palace of Westminster medals will be presented by Senior Representatives from official partner One Stop, Places for People, Specsavers, Objective HR and Experian, who all support this unique programme. Following this, medalists are treated to an Open Top Lap of Honour tour before attending a certificate presentation at the prestigious Church House.

The British Citizen Award is widely viewed as the nation’s way of recognising extraordinary, everyday people for exceptional endeavour and are truly representative of today’s multicultural Britain.
