Heal’s announces Hormazd Narielwalla as Mansard Gallery’s second artist in residence

Hormazd Narielwalla has been announced as the second solo artist to take residency at Heal’s Mansard Gallery, where his works will be showcased from Sunday 3rd April, 2022.

The exhibition, titled ‘Pattern Symphony’, will comprise of Narielwalla’s distinct and elegant abstract collages, featuring work from his most recent homage to David Bowie.

By applying vintage tailoring patters to collaged forms of handmade papers, Narielwalla’s bold compositions use positive and negative space to create a rhythmic sense of movement, depicting the fluidity of the human form.

‘Pattern Symphony’ celebrates the influence of music and dance on 20th century artists such as Picasso, Picabia and Bacon, using instructive points and line with blocked planes of colour, referencing Wassily Kandinsky’s early theories of abstraction, ‘Point and Line to Plane’.

Narielwalla will also showcase original works and the book from his ‘Diamond Doll’ series, which celebrates the iconic figure of David Bowie through repeated motifs of the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ persona. Conceived as a sculptural object in three parts, the book explores Bowie’s transformative power and ability to reinvent himself, and the ways in which his different identifies were projected through dress, make-up and performance.

The British-Indian artist has gained increasing recognition in recent years, with his portfolio featuring commissions for Roberto Cavalli Interiors, Victoria & Albert Museum and the Crafts Council, in addition to collaborations with King & McGaw and a permanent collection at J P Hackett, Saville Row.

Narielwalla commented: “In a world that can seem hostile and divided, our bodies and the ways they navigate this shifting landscape remain shared and universal. I believe that, to make sense of the present, we should respect a past that is confined to history.

“The human body is constantly changing form, expressed through the fashion that adorns us, the movements we make, and the colours and moods we reflect. Bowie’s shape-shifting ability to create different personas was the starting point for the Diamond Dolls, my most recent collection, which celebrates the idea of transformation into another self.”

Sabina Miller, buying director at Heal’s, commented: “For more than 200 years, Heal’s has always been proud to push the boundaries of design, and the Mansard Gallery was originally established as a platform to introduce customers to innovative artists and creators. Hormazd has a beautifully distinctive and thought-provoking style, and we are delighted to be showcasing his works in this latest Mansard exhibition.”

‘Pattern Symphony’ is the second show to be hosted at the historic Mansard Gallery in Heal’s, which reopened for the first time in 40 years earlier this year. Narielwalla will take residency throughout April & May, and the exhibited collection of original works will be available to purchase exclusively in store.
